A genggong is a Balinese jaw’s harp made from bamboo that is played using a combination of a throat and mouth technique with the flicking of the finger to vibrate the inner part of the bamboo stick. Soft-sounding to mimic the chirps of frogs in the rice fields in the monsoon season, genggong are still played in a number of villagers across the island to accompany a secular frog dance.

Watch a video of Mekar Bhuana’s genggong group to find out how the instrument sounds and how it is played in an ensemble.
